Archie Comics sadly reports that on Friday, March 2, the beloved 13-year-old male grizzly bear Jughead died. “Jughead was a wonderful, charismatic animal, and he will be missed by all of our staff and visitors,” said Bronx Zoo Director Jim Breheny.
The zoo reports, "Jughead was one of four bears that was rescued and transferred to the Bronx Zoo in 1995. As human populations increase and bear habitat shrinks, grizzly bears are forced to live near humans. Occasionally, some bears become too accustomed to people and their surroundings, which can lead to conflict. In these cases, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services relocate bears to more isolated areas. 'Nuisance' bears are given three chances to avoid contact with people before they are euthanized or an appropriate zoo home can be found. The Wildlife Conservation Society, headquartered at the Bronx Zoo, along with other accredited zoos, assists the USFWS by rescuing these bears. The Bronx Zoo was able to take two young brothers (Jughead and Archie) who were rescued from Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front. Two young, unrelated females (Veronica and Betty) were also rescued at that time from the Rocky Mountain Front in Montana and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming ."
Archie Comics says in its press release, "We have been honored to have had the grizzly bear named after one of our character and happy that our namesakes was able to entertain thousands of children and their parents over the years, much like our own Jughead Jones."
