See BRB's latest episode of "Fantastic Forum"

This author takes on hosting duties once again in the latest episode of the "Fantastic Forum" TV show airing in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philly and New York! The topic is movie adaptations of comic books, and we had a lot of fun taping this one at Awesome Con in D.C. Thanks to show producer Ulysses Campbell for his great editing job, because you don't see all the fun geeky stuff we're trying to remember and all the out-of-control laughing we're doing as we're taping this one! It turned out quite nice, even though it was recorded after-hours so you couldn't see the day's massive crowds behind us!

I think the show looked great! Im going to try to not be too long winded, or I might do it in parts. Ok I'll start with my favorite super hero. Superman. Im convinced they wilk never find anyone as great as Christopher Reeve. In my eyes he is superman in the movies and real life. I can go on and on about mr. Reeve. The first two movies were the best, obviously because they were made together. I think Gene Hackman did a great job as luthor. Given the era the first two movies were made, the special effects were spectacular. The story was good too, I still get goose bumps when super man made his first apperance to save lois. Its always nice to watch those two back to back every once in a while.
Superman 3 ( long sigh ) again Mr. Reeve did an awesome performance. And so did Mr. Pryor. The way it was directed it just did'nt have the same feel the way the first two did. Annette O'toole did a great performance as Lana. It was nice to see a little bit of superman as Clark and what his life is like. I was glad to see lois had some competition. Nothing against margot kidder, but she was just not the lois I pictured. Superman 4 (long disgusted sigh and hang my head down). What...in...the...world...were...they....THINKING??!!!!! Everything about that movie was just...uuugghhh... The character's looked old and tired, the story line was just horrible. Did anyone reading this see the dvd extra's? The other Nuclear man? I watched in total dis belief thank God that did'nt make it to the finished film. I bet the original cast were sorry they made that. It was just pure crap. Sorry folks, just saying how I feel. Im long time fan of the big guy in blue and red, and I get testy when he's misrepresented.

I did'nt know that i had a character limit, got a little carried away lol. Ok, my next comic hero I think they a phenomenal job on, Batman. I was a just a lad back then, 14 when Tim Burton redid what I still think was a great job. He did batman right, dark, mysterious, great action. Story, and the most awesome batmobille!! In my opinion its held up its coolness just as the day I first seen it. Michael Keaton could'nt have been better as batman. When I first heard he was doing the movie, I felt it was going to be a comedy, or campy. Boy was I wrong! All you younger generations have to understand the only other batman we had was the adam west series. Oh forgot to mention, I did'nt read too many comics. Was more of the movie buff, so all you comic people you had an edge on me. Batman did'nt go away from you. You lucked out! But the Keaton batman was a much welcome upgrade to what I was used to. That is no disrespect intended to the Adam west era. It has it place of greatness for me. I loved how they slid down the poles and were suited up at the bottom. Always wanted to know how that worked. When val kilner took the cowl, I had hopes it would be even better than Keaton's. Well I have to say first. It's not the actors fault. Kilner acually did'nt do too bad. Careys riddler was a home run. Just everything else to me about that movie was just goop. It pains me to say that because, there was a lot of great talent in there. I just can't understand why this happens a little bit too much. I dont think who ever the director was did their home work. Especially the next batman movie. It was'nt even cute campy, I tru to avoid that one at all costs! Its funny, both superman 4 and batman 4 SUCKED!!! So bad its just not worth talking about. Im going to do this in parts. So see you next time!!

Oh my goodness!! I completely forgot about Superman returns and the newest one. Ok it really shows when a director and crew do their homework before doing a movie right. There is a lot of things they did right on superman returns. First off, they kept the continuity with the first 2 superman movies. They reused Marlon Brando as Jor-el, this is real movie magic folks! There was a lot of love put into this movie. Brandon Routh really pulled off a true miricale as superman. The casting was perfect, Kevin Spacey was I think. One of the Best Lex Luthors ever, really brought out Lex's true nature. It all was great up to after superman saved the plane full of people. Ok after that, to the movie was done. Why it went the direction it went, maybe something diffrent is'nt always good. Honestly we all know kryptonite can hurt/kill superman. Why does it have to be in every single movie?? I mean Lex stabbed him with a kryptonite shank that just almost killed sup. You know its really bad if a mere mortal has to save superman. Lois pulls out the shank and then he takes on an entire continent of kryptonite??? Sorry folks that dog dont hunt for me. I still watch certain scenes if that movie with enjoyment though. Then you got the newest superman movie. Again, its not the actiors fault. Im not blameing them. The
big wigs or new director or whatever. They took something that had potenial from the last movie and ruined it. Why does every new director feel they have to rewrite an already known and successful character's beginings?? And keep rehashing the same stories? General Zod was great, he had his time back in superman 2! Superman does have other known adventures. Why cant they do something diffrent? And why did they get rid of Brandon Routh?? Did some one lose a bet or something?

Ok in my next instalment lol, one of the best super hero three quills that I think is Spiderman. That is movie makeing at its best. The director, actors all did their homework. I read some Spiderman comics when I was younger and from what I remember from the comics, they followed the comics really well. They kept the same actors and director through all 3 movies. I think that is key. The continuity was there the whole time. The big wigs dont always seem to understand that. Super hero movies pretty much are expected to have sequls. People who get attached to a certain character dont like seeing them constantly changed or re written. Yes we want to be entertained and change is good for a character. Not always wanting the same thing. But when a diffrent actor or director takes over in my eyes and opinion, its too much change. Unfortunately its going to keep happening. With all the tools they have to make movies now, it really falls on the writer and directors responsiablity. I love super hero movies, yea sometimes the one I dread still get viewed by me, because of my love of the character. Also bad movies help you appreciate the better ones!

Lol!!!!! You have some great choices there. Yea, i remember how i felt when I first saw Superman catch Lois in the first film when I was a little girl. Instantly in love with Superman!! I was in a daze for weeks. Yes, Christopher Reeve was wonderful, and i really did like Brandon Routh because of his amazing similarities. I don't quite understabd why they couldn't have done more with him, too. But he did a great job as the Atom on "Arrow," and now he will be on a new show soon. So good for him!

Its good Brandon is moving on to other projects. He's a good actor.
Another movie I thought was done well was the Fantastic 4. Im comic inparred on this one, but I felt they did the character's good. Even in the sequel, at least they kept the continuity from the original. What I dont get is why did they remake the fantastic 4 with new actors and have to start all over again. I did'nt see the newest movie, but from the previews it looked like their explaing the whole story all over again. What is up with that? Plus the new spiderman. Usually they wait a decade or so to remake a movie. Personally I'm hopeing they remake Sling Blade, this time Carl is fighting zombies!!! Lol!!
Anyway Sam Rami's movie was'nt even cold and they made the new spiderman. Did'nt see it yet but I seen peter has made a machine that spins the webs. I know in the comics they did that, I think they did both at one time? Where peter incrnted a web machine and one where it's part of his powers. Personally I think Sam Rami's versoin is best. Lets go back a couple of decades. Remember back in the early 90's they did a Capitan America? I did'nt think it was too bad, of course compaired with todays versoin it's kinda of lacking in a lot of ways. Todays C A, is another example of people doing their homework. Great story, casting, action, special effects. I wish they all could be made as labors of love.
