Archie releases first digital-only comic book

From Archie Comics

Archie Comics has just released an all-new holiday special Betty & Veronica Christmas Spectacular as its first exclusively digital comic book.

This new special holiday issue is Archie’s next step into the future of comic books. Archie Comics is embracing the digital medium in 2009, partnering with iVerse Media to open its online comic store archiedigital.com and also to release previously printed comics in digital versions for iTunes. The first of these releases, Archie Freshman Year #1, established Archie Comics as a grassroots digital comics leader when it quickly became the most downloaded comic book on iTunes.

Releasing an issue directly to digital may seem like the next logical move, but Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater emphasized the company’s desire to make their first digital-only release “something unique and extraordinary.” Betty & Veronica Christmas Spectacular is certain to live up to these expectations, especially in the eyes of fans who have eagerly anticipated this issue since the Betty & Veronica Spectacular title was saved from cancellation by a fan-organized movement on Facebook earlier in the year.

Betty & Veronica Christmas Spectacular is available now in the iTunes Store for download as an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/betty-and-veronica-christmas-spectacular/id334714885?mt=8
