We've been reporting here on the BRBTV News Blog about not only the appearances of "Batman: The Animated Series" creators Paul Dini and Bruce Timm at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, but also the screening of the fabbo new animated Superman flick, "Doomsday." Well, Batfans -- and fans of the '90s animated smash shows like "B: TAS" -- have even more to look forward to at the con: A new "Justice League" straight-to-DVD movie will also be previewed there.
"The New Frontier" is based on a 2004 six-issue miniseries comic, and it follows Supes and the gang from the end of World War II through the Cold War. The DVD will be released in February of next year, but it's just another item that adds value to the rockin'-biggest comic con of the year. And the "B: TAS" presence is definitely there: Timm is producing, while Stan Berkowitz worked on the script.
And the cast of "The New Frontier"? It has to be described, quite frankly, as out of this world ... David Boreanaz of "Bones" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as Hal Jordan / Green Lantern, Brooke Shields as Carol Ferris, Neil Patrick Harris as Barry Allen / Flash, Lucy Lawless as Wonder Woman (holy-heckin'-cow, who had THAT great idea? give 'em a gold star!), Kyle MacLachlan as Clark Kent / Superman, and Phil Morris, who portrayed Martian Manhunter this past season on the CW's "Smallville," as King Faraday. We're signed on, for sure!
And, just to ensure that this is a continuation of the "B: TAS" legacy, Shirley Walker is doing the music and Andrea Romano the casting. Read more about the DVD and its San Diego run here:

BRBTV News Blog Blip: Speaking of "B: TAS" (and we don't mind speaking about it at all!), remember that episode "Showdown," with Ra's Al Ghul in a western setting, along with a slightly more obscure DC character by the name of Jonah Hex? Well, Hex is getting his turn in the spotlight -- Warner Bros. has just announced a film project for the disfigured bounty hunter, from the crew that brought us the movie "Crank."
An indulgence of great classic television by journalist and author Billie Rae Bates.

Andrea Romano talks about Bat-projects
Andrea Romano, voice director for "Batman: The Animated Series," "Batman Beyond" and beyond, recently spoke with John Siuntres of Word Balloon about her many various projects and about the fun of working with celebrity voice talent.
Romano touched on the surprising interest of various megawatt celebrities in doing animated voices, of folks like Gene Simmons calling up and asking to do a role on a show. She says it's often because their kids want them to do it, and the role will make them the "hero" of the house. She's happy to accommodate, but, "I am of the mind, and have always been of the mind, that it really should be the right voice, whether they're a celebrity or a noncelebrity. I don't cast celebrities just for celebrity's sake."
She said, "I have a much bigger talent pool to pull from now than I did, let's say 20 years ago when I was casting for Hanna-Barbera."
In talking about the choices for this year's new animated feature "Justice League: The New Frontier," Romano said, "I never cast in a vacuum. It's never just me. I've done so much work with Bruce Timm, the producer, that he and I have a very good shorthand conversation that we can speak in. ... We've known each other for a really long time. ... He's the first person that I talk to."
On Brooke Shields, whom she had voicing a role for the TV show "The Batman" : "She was terrific and she so enjoyed it." Romano said she then thought of Shields when she was casting for the "JL" feature. Through many scheduling conflicts, Shields bent over backward to make it happen. "She was my heroine, and she truly wanted to be a part of it, and moved her life around."
Romano does a little voicework, herself, including the part of Martha Wayne in the new "Batman: Gotham Knight" feature. "I was an actress for a long time before I got into casting and directing. I never take a role away from a voiceover actress who would normally get paid ... Every once in a while when there's a gap, I'll step in and do it."

BRBTV News Blog Blip (and really, we should just make a daily feature out of the John Schneider update!): Pa Kent is making another appearance on the CW's "Smallville," according to the network's press materials released this week. In the May 1 episode, titled "Apocalypse," Clark sees how the world would have been if he had not come to Earth. It's a scenario that also means Pa Kent never died, and Schneider is listed in the credits. See the official word at KryptonSite.com (click on "Spoilers").

"Justice League" film looks like a winner
We reported in the July 25 post of this blog about the new straight-to-DVD "Justice League" movie, "The New Frontier," featuring some of the talents from our beloved "Batman: The Animated Series" and its various spinoffs. Warner Bros. is releasing the movie on February 26 on DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray and on-demand:

It's enough to make our geeky teeth chatter. We'll be there!
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Bativerse, Mark Hamill, who voiced the Joker in "B:TAS," weighs in on Heath Ledger's part in the new Batman flick. CinemaBlend and the MTV Movies Blog have the details.

Eric Close on tap for a new fall TV show
Now that's what we love to see -- the stars of our beloved BRBTV shows popping up during pilot season. Yahoo TV has the full rundown of this year's plans and offerings, and among them is "Nashville," a soap from ABC starring Eric Close, our former Sawyer Walker of "Santa Barbara" who's had quite a successful career since then. Close joins "Heroes" alum Hayden Panettiere, as well as Powers Boothe, the voice of Gorilla Grodd in "Justice League" (the subject of an upcoming BRBTV Report!). Read a little more at the Hollywood Reporter. Close is looking good!
Clancy Brown, the voice of Lex Luthor in "Superman: The Animated Series" and "Justice League," is part of the cast for "The Frontier," NBC's Western set in the 1840s. Shaun Cassidy is producing that one. Read more at the Hollywood Reporter.
We're also glad to spot some of our other faves slated for pilots: Julia Stiles (NBC's "Midnight Sun"), Zachary Levi (Fox's "Let it Go"), John Stamos (Fox's "Little Brother"), Robert Knepper (CW's "Cult"), Tyler Labine (NBC's "Animal Kingdom") -- he's such a cute kid!, Brandon Routh (CBS' "Partners") -- whom we had the pleasure of interviewing a year or two back, Jami Gertz (ABC's untitled Dan Fogelman project) -- wow, how long it's been since "Square Pegs"!
And we're certainly looking forward to the reboot of "Scruples," especially given the fact that it will be set in the '70s. And we probably couldn't resist the Roseanne Barr / John Goodman re-pairing of "Downwardly Mobile" -- for the latter more than the former.

"Batman: Gotham Knight" follows Warner Bros.' animated feature trend
Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, two of the creative forces behind our beloved "Batman: The Animated Series" and its varous offshoots, have done it again. "Batman: Gotham Knight" is an anthology of anime-inspired shorts revolving around our Caped Crusader, coming straight to DVD. Burnett is writing, and Timm is directing.

And there's a discussion about the DVD on Forumopolis:
http://www.forumopolis.com/showthread.php?t=66177
The DVD is scheduled for 2008 release, according to its IMDb page.
Also in the world of animation for DC / Warner Bros., the straight-to-DVD feature "Wonder Woman" could be close to securing its star voice. TV Guide's Michael Ausiello reports that Keri Russell is in advanced talks for the title role. Well, we did enjoy "Felicity" (we were always partial to buddy Amy Jo Johnson -- Pink Ranger rocks!!!!). The "WW" feature is said to be, of course, in the same vein as not only the aforementioned "Batman: Gotham Knight" but also the "Justice League: New Frontier" and "Superman: Doomsday" feature movies mentioned in earlier posts of this blog.
It makes every bit of sense that now is the time Warner Bros. would be doing an animated feature on the fabbo Amazon princess -- they are planning a live-action feature, after all. Of course, they've been planning that live-action feature for quite a while, and this is a role that could really make a budding actress' career. Let's at least hope this animated feature signals that the awaited live-action one is getting closer to the big screen.
Boy, oh, boy, we'll tell ya one thang ... we are ALL OVER that merchandise, when it hits! Target and Wal-Mart workers, steer clear ...
