It was chilly, but Davy Jones -- and a certain car -- were pretty hot

Neatly filed in the Sights You Don't See Every Day category ... How about a Monkee signing a Monkeemobile?

Yes, it's a real Monkee, and it's even a real Monkeemobile -- one of the two actual screen-used vehicles for the popular 1966 TV show. If you were in Tecumseh, Michigan, last weekend you might have seen this rare sight. Former teen idol Davy Jones, looking sharper than ever, came to town for a concert, and this red-hot Monkeemobile, snagged by our buddy Mel for a pretty penny a couple years back at the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Florida, strolled into town for an appearance, too. Our friend Mike, kind enough to send us these photos by Gary DeLisle, noted it was "brutal cold" that night, and Mr. Jones -- having barely made it to town in time despite a snowstorm en route -- ran out and signed the car and ran back inside, in a flash. So glad Gary captured the moment!

It's not the first time this Monkeemobile has been reunited with a Monkee after so many years, by the way. It got to park itself right next to Micky Dolenz during a signing appearance at the Motor City Comic Con in 2008, as well.

Signy Coleman invites you to her comfy cyber-home

When we interviewed Signy Coleman for our November 21 and 26, 2008 posts, she told us she was planning an official website, one that she had decided to launch to dispel some of the sometimes-outrageous things she would read about herself online. Well, Signy-Coleman.com is live and as inviting as a drive on a lovely stretch of the countryside.

At the site, you'll find not only the standard bio and resume and some beautiful snaps of the modeling days of our former Celeste DiNapoli of "Santa Barbara," you'll even see recipes from this new author, who is releasing a cookbook with her sister, Bethany Coleman-Atherton.

"As I grew and began expanding the area of my pond, my years as a ballerina and sheer determination earned me a ticket to Paris and the chance to strut the catwalks of high fashion," she reminisces in an excerpt from the book. "Forget about becoming Christian Dior’s muse, or being splashed across the glossy pages of fashion magazines, Paris was like waking up in a dream, the golden ticket firmly in hand, into a realm of food far exceeding anything I had ever experienced. ... For this 19 year old tomboy, who had never been further then the mountains north of San Francisco, it was rapture."

The sisters' book, "Snaggin' the Stag: Luring the Hart from Forest, Memoirs with Recipes," blends their own continental adventuring with exotic taste. "It's sort of memoirs of food and love and the chase that's involved," Signy told us about the book. "We tested all the recipes. We dressed, we photographed, everything is ours."

And now, Coleman's new website gives you a glimpse of not only the book, but also her travels and, unmistakably, her flair for life.

What’s New, Pussycats?

Two of the greatest bands in comic book history hook up like never before when Josie and the Pussycats come to town to tour with The Archies. However, more than music is made on one starry night outside Archie’s home, when there’s a kiss that could change Riverdale forever. Is it possible that the pure-hearted, red-haired lead of The Archies is really falling in love with Valerie, the beautiful bassist/songwriter of Josie and the Pussycats? What will happen to Betty and Veronica? “It Starts with a Kiss” is the beginning of a tale to be continued. Don’t miss out while the world watches to see if Archie and Valerie have what it takes to make their love survive. Look for part one in Archie #608, hitting stores this April!

James Best will be taking on the "Shrews" once again

Just a few years ago, in 2005, a fervent fan cried out for a sequel on the IMDb page for the 1959 movie, "The Killer Shrews." He kicked off some interesting responses, then later added, "I think James Best could return as the doctor if the movie is remade." Well, faithful fan, you'll be happy to know that Best, our own Rosco P. Coltrane of "The Dukes of Hazzard," is right now working on the script for the sequel, 50 years after the original was released.

"I am been very busy lately, doing a rewrite on a screenplay that Steve Latshaw and I are working on," Best says in the current issue of his email newsletter. "We hope to shoot the movie in the spring. It is a sequel to a movie I made 50 years ago. It is called 'Killer Shrews II.'"

The plot of the original, written by Jay Simms of "Have Gun, Will Travel" and "The Big Valley," involved a group of people on an isolated island, being terrorized by giant, voracious shrews. In the midst of a hurricane, we'll add. And hey, the promotional campaign involved a woman's pink pump and splattered blood, so whaddya expect? (But just so we're clear here -- we're talking about the vicious animal shrew here, not the ... ahem ... female.)

"This was a movie that I made as a favor to a man named Ray Kellogg," Best continues. "Years ago. It was made for practically nothing but was so corny that it actually became a cult film. We hope to shoot it in a three-dimensional format."

Archie Comics announces publishing agreement with Random House

Archie Comic Publications Inc. has reached an agreement with Random House Publisher Services, a division of Random House Inc., to exclusively handle worldwide distribution of Archie graphic novels and trade paperbacks.

The agreement with Random House Publisher Services marks the first time that all Archie paperback titles will be available from one source for both domestic and international trade bookstore distribution. Distribution of the Archie paperback line through Random House will commence on September 1, 2010. The direct comic store distribution of the Archie comics, digests and graphic novels will continue through Diamond Comic Distributors Inc.

“As Archie expands our business globally, we are thrilled to partner with Random House Publisher Services to bring the Archie brand to the world,” said Jon Goldwater, co-CEO of Archie Comics.

“We are delighted Archie Comics will be joining the RHPS client team this September,” said RHPS President Jeff Abraham. “We have developed a strong traction in the graphic-novel category with our bookseller customers, for whom this category is among their fastest-growing. We believe they quickly will find selling the beloved Archie characters and storylines profitable and fun.”

Archie Comics continues to position itself and its brands as an international entertainment entity across multiple media platforms, with many noteworthy accomplishments over the past few quarters. The company made its entry into the world of digital comics, resulting in the most downloaded comic in iTunes history. It also initiated a variety of crossover projects with stars of music, movies and television, and inked an entertainment representation deal with Creative Artist Agency. U.S. Postal Service issues our favorite soda threesome on a stamp

OK, we're afraid we're going to have to issue one of our run-don't-walk edicts, because this one's pretty hot ... This July, run, don't walk, to your neighborhood post office (and if you live in our neighborhood, get there really early, because there's always a line out the door just for usual business!), because you're going to want to nab yourself some of these Archie Comics stamps, part of the "Sunday Funnies" collection.

The U.S. Postal Service issued this description as it unveiled its 2010 line of stamps:

"Offering an idealized portrait of American adolescence, Archie existed only in comic-book form before debuting in newspapers in 1946. A typical small-town teenager with a knack for goofing things up, 17-year-old Archie Andrews is often torn between haughty brunette Veronica Lodge and sweet, blonde Betty Cooper."

Yea, don't we know it ... sigh ...

Spotted: Lane Davies

Though it might be unwise for him to admit it in polite company, Lane Davies, our own original Mason Capwell of "Santa Barbara," once starred in a short-lived Fox sitcom called "Woops!" The premise of the 1992 show was the aftermath of a nuclear war, when six people -- seemingly the only survivors -- gather at a farm to try to carry on with their lives.

They're quite a mix, these six. Davies is magnificently Masonlike as Curtis Thorpe, a former powerful stockbroker, forever clad in suit and tie and appropriately arrogant and authoritative. He's joined by Fred Applegate of "Night Court" and "Growing Pains," a schlumpy former homeless guy; Evan Handler of "Sex and the City" (with hair this time), the level-headed schoolteacher who narrates the show; Meagen Fay, who as the "bleeding heart liberal" of the group is poorly defined even by early-'90s standards; Marita Geraghty as the sexy ditzy girl (though brunette instead of blond, which doesn't seem to make sense, given the show's overuse of cliches); and Cleavant Derricks, patient pathologist and (even more patient) token black guy.

We had a special BRBTV viewing of four "Woops!" episodes (thanks, Tracy!). Despite the fact that it's vintage television, the show gives new meaning to the notion of absurdist comedy. Right away in the first few moments you're almost subconsciously suspending disbelief (the disbelief that the show actually aired, that is), though the more you watch, the more the initial blow is softened. Does it grow on you? Well ... ummmm ... maybe if you find one of its stars continually fascinating ...

Of the four eps, the most enjoyable was the one giving the best screen time to Davies. In it, he's assigned the chore of cleaning the farm's septic tank. He's truly traumatized, especially after losing his tie (read: corporate identity). He slips into a delusional state where he believes he's back in the mid-'80s, before this nuclear holocaust, and he's once again commanding his empire. (Sorry, no flashbacks featuring C.C. or Eden!)

Given the "Gilligan"-esque premise, we can kinda understand the fact that the characters always wear the same clothes, but really -- they have a whole world of clothing at their disposal! Are you telling us it's all radioactive or something? There have to be closets of clothing upstairs at the farmhouse!

OK, sorry. Thinking too much.

Josie and the Pussycats are purring again

OK, we don't make a practice of copying others' headlines (we used to write headlines ourselves for a living, once, ya know!), but this one was a good one. And along with the PR from Archie Comics, we got a line on the Hollywood Reporter's coverage of exciting news for Archie fans, and specifically fans of Josie and the Pussycats!

New York, NY -- Archie Comic Publications Inc. is excited to announce a partnership with entertainer and multimedia mogul Nick Cannon’s NCredible Entertainment to develop a scripted and nonscripted television series based on Josie and the Pussycats.

As part of Cannon’s vision to revive the famed rock trio, a worldwide search for the new Josie, Melody and Valerie will be chronicled on a potential reality competition series. The plan also includes a possible Josie offshoot, a dramedy scripted series starring the new band members. In addition, Archie plans to launch several new and exciting publishing projects for Josie and the Pussycats to coincide with the new series.

"Dallas" cast event postponed

On September 27, we reported on a fab New Year's Eve event planned with a dozen "Dallas" castmembers in Naples, Florida. Well, unfortunately the event has been postponed, BRBTV has learned from Jeanne Jackson, director of the J. Timothy Hogan Foundation, which is hosting the event. We'll let you know when we hear the new date and any other details.

"Dukes" fans celebrate a special VIP

You know, there's a reason we so dearly love our friends in "The Dukes of Hazzard" world. There's a reason we call them our very best friends.

A couple weeks ago, a special person in the "Dukes" world had a birthday. She's Miss Jo McLaney, fervent "Dukes" fan and preserver of precious "Dukes" collectibles at her former flower shop on the square in Covington, Georgia, a filming site of the first five "Dukes" episodes. We profiled Miss Jo in "Them Dukes! Them Dukes!", and we are privileged to call her a friend. Chad Fullerton, another longtime "Dukes" fan also featured in the book, decided to honor Miss Jo on her big day in a very public way. So we're including here, for your perusal, some images from that blessed day on the Covington Square ...


Both of these folks are lookin' good ... Here's Chad with Miss Jo, and the special plaque she received at her birthday celebration.

Can you believe that ole Boss Hogg had the nerve to show up? Turns out, he's a fan of Miss Jo, too! Who woulda thunk it?

"Dallas" project gets a(nother) new approach

For years BRBTV has been of the opinion that the only real way to revisit the "Dallas" property -- and give it fresh life, great continuity, honor, respectability and a whole new generation of fans -- is to center it around the boys, John Ross and Christopher. Throw in some Pamela Rebecca Cooper, too, of course. We've been dyin' to know what those kids have been up to, after all! And so much time has elapsed that nobody has to pull one of those cheesy daytime-soap manuevers and hyper-age the kids too rapidly. John Ross just turned the big 3-0, Christopher is 28, and cute little Pammie is 25. Perfect prime age for cuttin' a few corporate deals, cheatin' a few poor widows, runnin' a ranch, hostin' a few barbecues or rodeos, and throwin' all kinds of people into the Southfork pool! Heck, even Margaret Krebbs and Lucas Ewing are 22 -- fresh out of college, ready to attack the world! They're half-cousins, so we can picture them as good friends, despite the complicated relationships of their parents. And twins Bobby and Betsy Ewing -- they're at a nice, prime age, too. Even little Jimmy Beaumont is probably around 20.

Yea, we're likin' this. We're likin' this a lot. And we would look forward to seeing how the city of Dallas itself has changed since the oil-rich '80s. How would this fresh set of faces wear their 2010 Texan surrounds? Hmmm ...

So bring it on, man! Tell us their story!!!! Hire on the original actors to play 'em, if possible, and bring on a Hagman or a Duffy every other episode or so!!! Sounds like heaven!!!!

Well, we're encouraged by what we just read in the Hollywood Reporter. The rumors have been swirling for a couple months about TNT's "Dallas" project, such a long way, it seems, from the whole big-screen John Travolta thing. Now TNT has tapped Cynthia Cidre to write the script. She has some experience with primetime dramas; she created 2007's short-lived "Cane."

"The initial idea was to have the series revolve around J.R. and Sue Ellen's son John Ross and Bobby and Pam's adopted son Christopher," THR says, "but the studio and the network are waiting for Cidre's take on the Ewing clan and want to read her script before making a decision."
