"Dallas" cast plans its own rockin' New Year's Eve in Florida

They may not be reconvening at Southfork Ranch just yet, but there is a place where you can catch the cast of "Dallas" all in one shot: The Timothy Hogan Foundation Inc. has invited J.R. & Co. out to host a spectacular New Year's Eve charity bash in Naples, Florida!

"The Ewings of Dallas New Year’s Eve Safari and Gala" will be a multi-day celebration and will include an exclusive cocktail reception for sponsors and VIPs hosted by the cast, and a formal dinner limited to 146 guests at the Naples Hilton Towers on December 30. And there's a special after-dinner treat sweeter than any mint: a showing of a "Dallas" bloopers movie, along with Larry Hagman's personal bloopers and private movies! Yummy!

The next day, the main event at the Naples Grande Beach Resort will include a cocktail reception, again hosted by the cast, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, plus dinner, fireworks, a fun “Dallas Cast” Q & A session, the countdown to the new year and a champagne celebration.

Cast members confirmed for the event so far:
Larry Hagman (J.R. Ewing)
Charlene Tilton (Lucy Ewing)
Steve Kanaly (Ray Krebbs)
Susan Howard (Donna Krebbs)
Ken Kercheval (Cliff Barnes)
Sheree J. Wilson (April Stevens)
Deborah Shelton (Mandy Winger)
Audrey Landers (Afton Cooper)
Joan Van Ark (Valene Ewing)

Keep your eye on the foundation's site, DallasFanzine.com, or Ultimate Dallas site's page; the goal is for 14-16 cast members to attend this blockbuster event.

The Timothy Hogan Foundation Inc. of Naples is a volunteer 501(c)(3) organization that focuses exclusively on treatment options for children in working families experiencing mental health issues, with the goal of reducing teen suicide, the third most frequent cause of death in Florida. Learn more at http://www.jthogan.org/.

By the by ... in our September 9 post we reported on the blockbuster Hollywood Show happening next month. Turns out, Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy have been added to the menu for this classic star feast, and, show organizer Judith Moose tells BRBTV, "there's a good chance that Larry Hagman will be popping in, too." Rock on, man!

Archie Comics and Dark Horse join forces on archive edition

From Archie Comics

Archie Andrews, America’s typical teenager, was presented for the first time in PEP COMICS #22 in December 1941. Since then, Archie and his friends have entertained eight generations of readers. The opportunity has now arrived for both old and new Archie fans to experience Archie’s fun-filled journey to become the world’s most popular teen. Archie Comics is excited to announce a strategic partnership with Dark Horse Comics, as Archie and the kids from Riverdale will be joining the Dark Horse line of classic comic reprints.

The Archie Archives will consist of hardcover volumes, in Dark Horse’s archive format, featuring Archie Comics' mainstay characters of Archie, Betty, Jughead, Veronica and the other characters in the Riverdale universe. Each individual title will begin with the earliest published issue and move forward in chronological order. Each volume will be approximately 200-250 pages, feature embossed printing and a dust-jacket, and carry both the Archie Comics and Dark Horse names and logos. The initial plan is to release three volumes of each title per calendar year, with each volume retailing for $49.95. According to Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson, the series will run indefinitely.

Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater says, “We have seen the quality and care Dark Horse has put into restoring and collecting material for their archival series, and we are looking forward to making our early MLJ library of classic material available to a new generation of kids and collectors.”

Lane Davies hits the stage once again

Lane Davies playing an “extremely loveable narcissistic character”? Yes, that sounds really familiar! But no, we're not talking about the amazing Mason Capwell of our beloved "Santa Barbara." Davies is taking on another loveable narcissistic character ... Henry Higgins of "My Fair Lady."

The Murfreesboro Post has a fresh interview with Davies, who hit the stage in Tennessee last weekend and continues through this weekend. Thanks to Tracy for the heads-up.

Spotted: Joanna Cassidy

She launched her acting career back in 1968, and after four decades she's busier than ever, with new projects such as "Flying Lessons" and "For Sale by Owner." In 1980, though, she was the rather-luscious Sally Bullock, the not-to-be-dismissed wife of Ewing business associate Eugene Bullock on "Dallas." A couple years later, she was the "beauty and the beast" synthetic human (called a "Replicant") on the Harrison Ford sci-fi movie "Blade Runner."

Joanna Cassidy, who also voiced Maggie Sawyer on the "Superman" animated series of the '90s among so many other credits, portrays Thora in the 2019-based flick. When the Blade-Running Ford finally tracks her down at her "night job," she's all flesh and sparkles with a huge snake around her neck (a Burmese python that was actually the actress' pet at the time). She sees through his guise and quite promptly knocks him to the floor and escapes. As the chase scene ensues, Cassidy's character charges through a huge window, a scene that was reshot two decades later to patch up the obvious stunt-double face. (Cassidy was thrilled to still fit into the barely there outfit she wore, the IMDb says.)

The New Jersey-born Cassidy also appeared in the "Dukes of Hazzard" spinoff "Enos," and has had recurring roles on "Diagnosis: Murder," "Falcon Crest," "Melrose Place," "Six Feet Under," "Boston Legal" and many more.

Ken Kercheval will take your questions; Joan Collins chats anew

The Ultimate Dallas site is at it again, kicking up some good-ole "Dallas" dust with a set of interviews with those beloved classic stars. First up is Ken Kercheval, our own Cliff Barnes. Click on over to the interview page to add your inquiry. Soon after will be Larry Hagman and Linda Gray (submit your question at the forum).

Meanwhile, what does Joan Collins have going on these days? Watch a fresh interview with our own Alexis Colby of "Dynasty" at YouTube. Looking smashing in black, she chats with Ryan Tubridy of "The Late Late Show" on Bette Davis, facial tics as Alexis and more! You can even see the scene where she takes down Cecil Colby ("Unfortunately, he is dead now," she quips after the clip). Yikes!

Rosemary Forsyth is one of many great classic stars appearing at the Hollywood Show

It got our attention when we saw fellow author Judith Moose busily booking the guests, and it looks like it's going to be a great event. It's the Hollywood Show, which happens a few times a year and is next set for October 10 and 11 in Burbank, California. Beware -- it's going to be a delightful feast of classic TV and film stars for your autograph pleasure (more like a gorging, actually).

One of those stars will be Rosemary Forsyth, our own original Sophia Capwell / Dominic of the earliest days of "Santa Barbara." Her fellow "SB" veteran Linden Chiles, who was Edward Nichols, Dash's father, will be there, too. Chiles was also Kit Mainwaring's father Chris Mainwaring on "Dallas."

Richard Hatch, whom we know as Dean Calder of "Dynasty," will also be appearing at the Hollywood Show, which happens at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel & Convention Center.

Russell Johnson, a BRBTV double-shot as Sheriff Wyatt Mansfield on "Dallas" and Julia Wainwright's father Roger on "Santa Barbara" (as well as the brief role of Roger Bell, voice auditioner in Gina's wicked scheme against C.C. Capwell), will also be signing. (He was definitely the castaway we would have wanted to be stranded on "Gilligan's Island" with!)

Herb Jefferson Jr. will be appearing -- he was Walden in the 1984 "Dukes of Hazzard" two-parter, "Undercover Dukes."

Here are some other tables you've gotta stop at while you're there ...
- Claudia Christian: 1984 episode of "Dallas," "Some Do ... Some Don't"
- Paul Comi: Dr. McWright in the 1981 episode of "Dallas," "Waterloo at Southfork"
- Doug Heyes Jr.: Floyd Jones of "The Dukes of Hazzard" episode "The Law and Jesse Duke," 1982 (who also appeared in the spinoff "Enos")
- Marlyn Mason: Emily Grimes toward the end of the run of "Dynasty"
- Read Morgan: Hap Moody on 1990's "Dear Hearts and Gentle People" episode of "Dallas," and Curtis on a couple episodes of "The Colbys"
- Tim O'Connor: 1987's "Some Good, Some Bad" episode of "Dallas," Thomas Crayford on "Dynasty" in 1982, and Thackery (that mean-old armored-car robber) of "The Dukes of Hazzard" 1982 episode "Bad Day in Hazzard"
- Peter Mark Richman, one of BRBTV's faves, who was Ewing associate Maynard Anderson on "Dallas," attorney Andrew Laird on "Dynasty" and the original C.C. Capwell on "Santa Barbara."
- John Saxon: Rashid Ahmed on "Dynasty"
- Edson Stroll: Charlie Haas and John Kane on "Dallas" in 1991, and a board member on the "Dynasty" episode "The Vote" in 1986

Check out the bios of all the stars at the show's site, and know that if you're a big "Twilight Zone" buff like we are, you are sooooooooo in heaven! This October show marks the classic series' 50th anniversary.

Billy Dee Williams and John Schneider have upcoming con appearances

Billy Dee Williams, our own Brady Lloyd of "Dynasty," will be meeting and greeting at this year's Big Apple Con in (you guessed it) the Big Apple. Dates are October 16-18 at Pier 94 Manhattan, 55th and 12th Avenue in New York City.

The event's other guests include Nichelle Nichols of "Star Trek," who also did a voice on our beloved "Batman: The Animated Series," Willem Dafoe and Linda Hamilton.

John Schneider, our own Bo Duke of "The Dukes of Hazzard," will appear at Adventure Con in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, the following weekend, October 24-25. There will be a General Lee in attendance (how could there not?), and other celeb guests will include Jason Mewes of all those crazy Kevin Smith movies and Micky Dolenz of the Monkees.

In the spirit of "Archie's Weird Mysteries," Archie Comics plans a spooktacular time for Halloween

From Archie Comics

In the nearly 70 years that Archie Comics have been published, Archie and his friends have commemorated the holidays time and time again. Countless stories featuring the gang involved in hilarious and heartwarming tales revolving around Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, and especially Christmas have peppered the pages of Archie Comics, much to the delight of readers.

One holiday that is a mainstay of Archie Comics is Halloween. Kids love to dress up in costumes and have masquerade parties, and Archie and his friends are no exceptions.

Time and time again their Halloween hijinx have led to hilarity. And sometimes they even met real monsters, as in the pages of “Life with Archie” and “Archie’s Weird Mysteries.”

This fall, the Riverdale teens are at it again. Don’t miss the spooky fun!

Spotted: Joan Collins

Making a grand entrance just before the opening theme? Well, that we can believe. But on the TV show "Roseanne"?

Yes, indeed, it was our own one-and-only Alexis Colby of "Dynasty" splashing into a 1993 episode of the hit sitcom starring Roseanne Barr / Arnold. Playing Ronnie, a high-falutin' cousin of Roseanne who snubbed her out of being a bridesmaid for her wedding, Collins enters the title character's loose-meat diner and immediately dives into the cattiness for not only Roseanne but her business partners.

"You know, I'm a little busy now. Can you come back and envy me in about 10 minutes?" she says to Nancy as the Sandra Bernhard character asks her if that's a real Fendi bag.

"I heard Becky got married," she slyly says to her cousin. "Any grandchildren yet?"

There's even a "Dynasty" reference, as the girls are reminiscing through old photos:

"Oh, God, is that mudfight going to haunt me forever!" Collins says with an eye roll.

"Yea," Roseanne pipes up, "remember how upset I got with you for stealing my boyfriend Blake?"

Despite the drastic change of scenery, tone, format and camera style(!), Collins has just about as many costume changes as the typical "Dynasty" episode -- from a smart blue suit to patterned leggings to cheetah blouse and tightie-pants to simple blouse and jeans. And though she enters with a rich, sophisticated, snobbish aura, she softens as the storyline advances.

The episode, titled "First Cousin, Twice Removed," even features a verbal catfight. For a minute, anyway.

Greg Evigan takes on the "Phantom Racer"

We have to admit, there's not a single movie that Syfy puts in its 9 p.m. Saturday timeslot that we won't watch, being diehard fans of the creature-feature and all. So Greg Evigan had an easy audience in BRBTV when he told us back in June about the movie he was exec-producing and starring in for the science-fiction network (see our June 30 post). Frankly, we couldn't wait. And we didn't have to wait! The movie, called "Phantom Racer," aired this past Saturday.

Our own Willie Gust of "Dallas," who more famously starred in "B.J. and the Bear" right after kidnapping little Lucy Ewing, was looking comfy and right at home behind the wheel of a big rig again as J.J. Sawyer in the movie, his first foray into producing. Playing younger than his 55 years here, Evigan is a former racecar driver returning to his hometown after 17 years. He reunites with an old buddy, Cliff, who confesses that he and their other friend, Cutter, had actually sabotaged J.J.'s car in the big race crash that claimed Cutter's life so many years before (a crash for which J.J. was blamed). And if Evigan is playing young, his love interest in the film, former "Baywatch" babe Nicole Eggert, was right on target for her own 37 years as Tammy, the onetime love interest of all three of the racing friends. She's now married to Cliff and is the mother of a teen girl.

You can see the big reveal from a half-mile down the track, especially if you've ever seen a soap in your life (!), but the real fun of this film is the car. You see, ole Cutter didn't take too kindly to being offed in the race, so he has returned to commandeer the old racing car as the "Phantom Racer." As the invisible driver, he clips off Cliff and several others, then comes after J.J.

We have to admit, what we liked most about this movie was that it showed you actually can use actors past their 20s in lead roles. Actors don't die when they hit 35, ya know? Why not use more of our beloved classic TV stars? Anyhow ... you could certainly see Evigan's influence in other ways, like the inside joke of Tammy's daughter, Jesse, as she sarcastically tells J.J., "You killed my two dads." (Well, we don't think Evigan killed the show, Jesse -- it was pretty good, if we recall! And thanks, Mr. Evigan, for J.J.'s significant pause and half-smirk; we thought you were gonna look right at the camera to make sure we all got it!)

Louise Sorel talks about her return to daytime

She departed with "her butler, $40 million in cash and a limousine." Sound a little like Augusta Lockridge of our beloved "Santa Barbara"? Well, certainly. It was Louise Sorel, but it wasn't Augusta. It was another of her alter-egos, Vivian Alamain of "Days of Our Lives." Sorel will reprise her role on the NBC soap this fall.

Sorel, who's also working on her memoirs right now, chats about the show, the characters and the state of soaps today in an interview with Soaps.com. And she mentions "SB" a time or two.

Sorel took on the role of Vivian Alamain a few months after she left "SB," and she ran it until 2000. SoapOperaSource.com has a little more on Sorel's return.

And Entertainment Weekly notes that Sorel also will be cohosting the Soap Opera Digest Awards.

Colbie Caillat and timeless teen icon Archie Andrews "fallin" together in comic book style

From Archie Comics

Perpetual teen and all-American comic book icon Archie Andrews may have sent shockwaves around the world when it was recently announced he will propose to fussy heiress Veronica Lodge (and not girl-next door Betty Cooper) in the 600th issue of the 68-year-old comic book, but don't tell Universal Republic singing sensation Colbie Caillat.

The platinum-plus, award winning singer/songwriter has 'fallen' for the redheaded Archie in a big way, and will be ushering in her new single "Fallin' For you" and upcoming new album, BREAKTHROUGH, due out August 25, by literally "fallin' " for Archie in a historic singing match-up splashed inside the pages of Veronica's very own comic - VERONICA # 196. The combustible issue features Archie and Colbie on the cover playfully readying for their musical debut together while a very wary Veronica looks on! The much-buzzed about issue hits newsstands on September 2.

The charismatic Colbie, whose breakthrough 2007 single "Bubbly" and debut double-platinum album COCO took the entire music and online world by storm, may be facing her most daunting challenge yet as she heads into fabled Riverdale. Known for generations as the idyllic home of Archie Andrews and his pals 'n' gals from Riverdale High - it's even more famous as the comedic hornet's nest to one of the most storied love triangles in all of comicdom. And even though Archie's much-publicized proposal to Veronica is set five years in the future, the comic hijinx surrounding Colbie, Archie, Veronica and Betty is most definitely churning in real time.

In the story, appropriately titled "Fallin' for You", Betty wins tickets to see Colbie Caillat in concert, and Veronica wants in, but Betty has already promised to take Archie! Of course, when Veronica wants something, she doesn't give up that easily. And wait until you see what happens when she runs into Colbie!

"Mixing it up with Archie, Veronica, and Betty and the gang is absolutely one of the highlights of my career," says Colbie. Not to be outdone, Veronica Lodge texted us this quote about appearing with the Malibu-based superstar. "Colbie is cool. She is incredibly talented with a sensational singing voice. Riverdale hasn't seen anyone like her since ... well ... me."

Archie was ... ahem ... conspicuously unavailable for comment.

As for Betty, she only asks that you pick up a copy or two of VERONICA#196 to see who exactly falls for who ....

Colbie Caillat burst on to the music scene in July 2007 with COCO, gaining unprecedented notoriety prior to the release of the acclaimed album as one of the emerging 'do-it-yourselfers' in the digital realm. Cited as the #1 unsigned artist on MySpace at the time, her unscripted rise attracted a passionate online audience across the globe.

Hailed at the beginning of 2007 by Rolling Stone magazine as the music scene's most promising undiscovered star (Universal Republic Records welcomed her into the fold soon after), her laid-back song "Bubbly" and subsequent album COCO connected with fans via a groundswell of word-of-mouth excitement that helped vault her to the top of the online, radio and video charts: The CD debuted with a record breaking opening on iTunes' coveted Albums chart within hours of its release, scoring a Top 5 landing on its first go-around on the Billboard Top Albums chart (the song hovered amid the top echelon of the charts for months and even returned to the Top Ten for a second run in the fall of '07). "Bubbly" hit #1 on the Triple A and Hot AC formats, garnering more than 100 million in radio audience, with her world-famous MySpace site setting record after record in online popularity, currently nearing an astounding 50 million visits by fans.

Checkin' in with John Schneider

It's been a while since we got a status on the continually busy Bo Duke of "The Dukes of Hazzard," so let's just see what Mr. John Schneider is up to ...

- A role on "90210": "Don't be surprised when you see that I am not a nice man on that show," Schneider says in today's issue of his official newsletter. "I guess they needed someone to emotionally beat on Liam" (played by Matt Lanter), "and that's me. I make Lionel Luther look like an understanding parent!" The CW remake of Fox's '80s-'90s "Beverly Hills, 90210" is scheduled to return for its second season on September 8.

- Back in the studio at the end of July recording music again -- "and this time in connection with his good friend Toby Keith," his official site says.

- A movie wrap: A few weeks back, Nasser Entertainment Group wrapped its film of the book "In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do?" by Charles Sheldon. Schneider appears in the film, based on the second best-selling Christian book of all time (behind only the Bible itself!), along with Adam Gregory and Maxine Bahns. The company is planning their second "WWJD?" film to shoot in early next year. To learn more about the film visit WWJDmovie.com.

- No-go on the Clint flick: Schneider was in consideration to play Clint Eastwood's son in a new movie, but no-go. "It seems that he is looking for someone with more of a 'character' look to play his son," Schneider says in his blog. "I'm bummed, but life goes on. Personally I think he forgot what he looked like at 48. I thought it would be a great fit."

Michael Uslan to script Pureheart the Powerful for Archie

From Archie Comics

Archie Comics made headline news this summer when it was announced that Michael Uslan (executive producer of "The Dark Knight", "Batman Begins") would be scripting the "Archie marries Veronica" story. The news was covered in newspapers around the world and was featured in television segments from "The Rachel Maddow Show," the "Today" show, "The View" and "Live with Regis & Kelly," to name just a few! Both David Letterman and Jay Leno included the Archie and Veronica wedding in their monologues!

Early next year Archie Comics and Michael Uslan will begin their next exciting project together with the re-imagining of Pureheart the Powerful (Archie as a superhero, if you recall), in a series of five specials.

"We're not just talking ONE superhero here!" Usland says. "Archie will be joined by Betty as Superteen, Jughead as Captain Hero, Reggie as Evilheart Jr., and wait'll you see the super-versions of Veronica, Dilton and Moose! Surprises galore are just ahead!"

He continues, "Pureheart and Pureheart's Emergency Patrol will debut in a series of five one-shot comic books that bring back to life the five historic superhero titles that launched Archie Comics, originally known as MLJ Comics, back in the Golden Age of the 1930s and 40s."

Spotted: Barbara Bel Geddes

"You're Lucia Clay, you're 26, and Alan says you're very lovely." So a woman tells herself amid her nightly dreams, as a foghorn sounds in the distance ...

That young lady is Barbara Bel Geddes, two decades before she perched herself at the "other" head of the table at Southfork on "Dallas," and the episode is "The Foghorn" of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." Clad in light satin and long luxurious gloves in a sumptious ballroom scene, she quickly steals the heart of her fiance's business associate, played by Michael Rennie. She's unmistakable, our younger Miss Ellie Ewing, with her sweetly mannerisms. Tiny as a thimble, she sashays out of her engagement and into a budding friendship with this (married) man. Despite their happy times together, she develops a feeling of dread. And that's all we can say!

The March 1958 episode was part of the show's third season. No surprise, Bel Geddes also appeared in Hitchcock's film "Vertigo" that same year.

Smoky Mountain Fan Fest: A little "Duke" boy's dream

It pays to emulate Bo Duke, ya know. Especially if you're a young'un. Hunter Seiber, 4, of Tennessee found that out when he won a local contest -- and tickets for his family to attend this past weekend's Smoky Mountain Fan Fest. His parents submitted Halloween photos of him, depicting him dressed up like Bo Duke complete with beige shirt and blond wig, to the local newspaper. Fellow fans voted online, and Hunter took the top prize.

"He won two tickets to Fan Fest and three nights' stay at the Holiday Inn and dinner for two, for three nights," his mom, Tammy Seiber, says. "The package also included meeting the cast members. So we are very excited that he won!!!! He loves 'The Dukes of Hazzard.'"

Tammy sent BRBTV these photos of the weekend's fun, where Hunter and his family got to meet not only Catherine Bach, Sonny Shroyer, Don Pedro Colley, Byron Cherry, James Best, Ben Jones and Rick Hurst of "The Dukes," but also Butch Patrick of "The Munsters," Donna Douglas of "The Beverly Hillbillies" and Munchkin Margaret Pellegrini of "The Wizard of Oz." Crazy, classic stuff!

The family got autographs from all the "Dukes" cast members who were at the event, which was held at the Smokies Baseball Stadium in Kodak, Tennessee.

"Donna Douglas (Elly May Clampett) was also there and was sweet enough to let us snap a picture at the hotel where we stayed," Tammy says, "along with all of the cast members that were at Fan Fest (that was a treat, especially for Hunter)."

"Some of the entertainment included the Country Tonight Theater from Pigeon Forge, Cooter's Garage Band, with Cletus and Enos joining them on stage for a couple of songs (Rick Hurst was so funny)," she says, "and Catherine Bach and her two daughters (Laura and Sophia, above) sang Patsy Cline's 'Crazy,' and Janie Fricke closed the show."

"I would just have to say some moments that stand out in my mind would be Byron Cherry, he is always fun with the kids," Tammy says, "and when Catherine was told about Hunter winning a 'Dukes of Hazzard' look-alike contest, she signed all eight items we had for free. I thought that was very classy. And last, Ben asked if he could display Hunter's contest-winning photo in one of his Cooter's store museums (very touching to a proud momma). We had a very fun time."

Many thanks to Tammy and her whole family for sharing the fun with us!

Tennessee Shakespeare Festival: A little peek

Ahhhh ... it takes a special kind of "Santa Barbara" fan to drive across the country just to see one of the show's stars in the Tennessee Shakespeare Festival. While we cannot show you photos of the actual play we saw since it was an Equity production, we can still offer a little glimpse of the whole experience ... four days in a car, 1,100 miles, from D.C. to Dalton, Georgia, to pick up a fellow "SB" fan, then up to Bell Buckle, Tennessee ...

What a sweet little town that the festival host, the Webb School, is located in, we saw as we arrived on Saturday afternoon ....

We couldn't resist taking a closer look at this bright caboose, retired and parked near the main street of town.

There it is ... the very event that brings us here ...

The stage is set for "Romeo & Juliet," inside a roomy and comfy tent on the grounds of the school.

The Webb School also produced "A Midsummer Night's Dream" as part of this summer's festival; those playdates were in June and earlier July. The Tennessee Shakespeare Festival is in its second year.

This version of "Romeo & Juliet" was set on the frontier of 18th-century America, complete with Redcoats and Indians. "After almost 40 years of acting, directing and producing Shakespeare," director Lane Davies said, "I look for ways to freshen the more familiar plays without compromising the story or the author's intent. I especially wanted a period that would preserve the romanticism of this season's 'Romeo & Juliet,' as well as exploit the opportunities for the more visceral and violent aspects of the play."

Some of the actors rehearse the fight scenes before the play.

There he is, the man of the hour, Mr. Lane Davies, our own Mason Capwell of "SB." After the show, he did some meet-and-greet and was incredibly warm and cordial.

Not only did he direct the play, but had a powerful role as Prince, the Redcoat who was tasked with some formidable crowd control amid the warring Montagues and Capulets. For this key role, which basically served as our "host" for the classic love story, Davies' voice thundered from the balcony as if he were Mason fighting once again with his dad C.C.! But after the show ... he was the most handsome and kind Southern gentleman, so at ease with chatting with folks!

Davies has another upcoming stage gig, by the way: Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady" in September at Smyrna, Tennessee's Lamplighter's Theatre.

Davies suggested this photo with our traveling companion Tracy. "Now you can say you've been on stage with me," he softly joked as he led her over to the prop well. Thanks, Mr. Davies, for a fine, fine production of "Romeo & Juliet," and for the amazing work you do!

To see more photos from this crazy chick road trip, see BRB's author profile page in Facebook.

Spotted: Michael Parks

Wow, that's some mile-high hair on that dude. And if you didn't look close, you wouldn't realize that it's Michael Parks, our own Phillip Colby of "The Colbys." Sydney Pollack directed this episode of "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" (yes, we're still on that classic tour, and we're gonna bring you each and every BRBTV star we spot among the master of horror's hourlong TV shots!).

Parks plays Dr. Dan Dana in "Diagnosis: Danger," one of two episodes of the series he appeared in, about 25 years before he came back from the grave to torment poor Frankie Colby. He's an epidemiologist dealing with an anthrax outbreak in L.A. Parks seems taller and leaner than his "Colbys" days (Johnny Bravo hair helps), though the tilt of the head is certainly the same. Horned-rim glasses add a nice touch.

The Calilfornia-born Parks began his acting career at only age 20 and has numerous roles to his credit. He's even got a couple new projects in the works: "The Last Horseman" and "Smokin' Aces: Blowback."

BRB releases her third novel, "Enie"

There's just something different about Enie.

From the moment this mysterious young woman sweeps into the sleepy Southern town of April's Hope, she raises eyebrows. Well-spoken and so "city," she quickly purchases the town's most expensive piece of real estate: the elaborate, hulking, custom-built stone house, which has sat empty for two years. She also keeps the details of her personal life to a minimum ... fresh out of Philly, her fortune made in Internet domain prospecting in the 1990s, looking for something different in her life ...

Just why Enie is in the town of April's Hope is sure to keep readers guessing in the third novel from longtime author and journalist Billie Rae Bates -- known on this news blog as our own BRB.

"She's a mysterious figure, and she's very different," says Bates, who up until a couple months ago lived in the South, herself. "Tongues quickly start wagging about her, and as the story progresses, it's clear there's something unusual going on with her life. She's on the run from something or someone, and strange things seem to happen around her."

"Enie" is a story about redemption, the author says. "Just about every character in the book experiences some sort of personal redemption, however great or small, and for the two main characters, it's very big."

"Enie," a 388-page trade paperback, is a departure from Bates' other two novels, "Rubi" and "Call Me Mary Magdalene." The other two books were set in downtown Detroit, where Bates spent seven years living and working. Those first two novels also were written in the first person, whereas "Enie" is written in the third person. And another element unique to "Enie": for the character and place names, the 41-year-old reached back in time -- to her elementary school days, to be exact.

"I mixed and matched first and last names of kids I went to school with," she says. "There's a Jodi Lane, a Hall Street, a city named Markton ... and the character names are mostly derived from pieces of those elementary schoolmate names."

Born and raised in rural mid-Michigan, Bates graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and English. She spent 10 years in the daily newspaper business, including The Detroit News, before moving into the corporate world for several years. She then worked in ministry for several years while living in Georgia, all the while developing not only the novels but also BRBTV, which began as a web tribute to classic '80s TV shows such as "Dallas" and "The Dukes of Hazzard" and evolved into fact books and reference guides.

The idea for "Enie" came to Bates on May 18, 2004, as she was sitting at her kitchen table in northern Michigan, where she had worked as a director of communication at a health system. "I dismissed it at first," she admits, "because I was just finishing up my second novel for print and really didn't want to take on another project, and I was nurturing a lot of BRBTV projects at the time, too. But the more I tried to ignore this idea for a third novel, the more it seemed to chase me around. I realized that the project was very special."

In some ways it's been a labor of love, much like the attention-getting photo-essay project, "My Mother's Clothing," which she launched in 2008 in celebration of her 40th birthday. The yearlong project, a sort of weekly photo and essay blog, chronicled 52 different pieces from the clothing collection once belonging to her mother, Lois Ann Bates, and originally worn in the '50s and '60s. Bates followed up My Mother's Clothing with a second yearlong photo essay project for 2009, "The Inexplicable Lives of Dolls," which showcases her own fashion doll collection from childhood and modern times.

And now, as a special initiative in memory of her mother, Bates is giving away a free copy of "Enie" to 100 friends and family members who've supported her in her writing efforts.

"Any writer will tell you, this business is a long, long road, rife with rejection," says Bates, who recently moved from Georgia to the Washington, D.C., area. "I've very much appreciated anyone I've known who's paid a compliment, bought a book, or shown support in some other way. Plus, I believe so much in this story that I'm going to make sure someone reads it -- even if I have to give the books away!"
